1. Question: What harm has the Cultural Revolution and Mao done to you and your family
Answer: it drove my family apart. Due to the Cultural Revolution, my grandmother couldn’t take it anymore and so she committed suicide. The Cultural Revolution gave my family a bad reputation and also everyone hated because I belonged to a black family… Mao did not just harm my family but made my life terrible (pg 116-118)
2. Question: is it true that your mother was made a fool with da-zi-baos because she taught students in an old way?
Answer: yes she was and she was also brutalized and harassed a lot. My whole family couldn’t sleep because of it, and also she had to climb a chimney because she was under investigation (pg 152-153)
3. Question: did you have troubles with school due to the Cultural Revolution?
Answer: (pg 156) yes, sometimes I missed school and could not go, I was late most of the times and for a year I could not attend school because it was closed down, because of the Cultural Revolution, and also it harmed my education very much.

1.Who are the members of Ji-Li’s family? Describe her family home. What class status does her family belong to? What is the occupation of her father? Mother?
The members of Ji-Li's family are Ji-Yong as the younger brother (11years old), p14, Ji-Yun (10 year old), Song Po-Po (the nanny/housekeeper), (pg.14-15) mom and dad, Grandmother, (who used to be the principal), p14, Aunt and cousin, (they live downstairs and the cousin is You-Mei (pg.15) a cat called "little White", (pg.17). You-Mei's baby (Hua-Hua) (pg.15).
Her family home is a big building in Shanghai, a french window and high ceiling (pg.15) and had only one room. The apartment was warm, and bright, p7. There was a private bathroom, as large as some peoples entire house, (pg.15-16). They lived on an alley, (pg.20). Mahagony table, (pg.16).
Family occupation: Her dad is an actor and her mom used to be an actor (pg.13) (she now works at a sport store). Her Grandmother was vice-principal of her old school (pg.14).
Her families class status: Upper middle class (pg.16), (there family had a bigger place to live in and were more special). (pg.15) her Grandmother had a modern education.
2. What is Ji-Li’s life at school like? What special honor is Ji-Li picked for at school? Describe Ji-Li’s parents’ reaction. What does Ji-Li do instead of entering the audition?
Ji-Li's life at school: Ji-Li was expected to succeed in everything, She was able to excel (pg.1). They were acussing her and her best friends for spreading the "four olds" (pg.34-36). Ji-Li scored a perfect score on a math test (pg.3)
She had oppertunitys for dance training (pg.6)
What special honor is she choosen for?: The central liberation army arts academy choose Ji-Li for their dance troop (pg.6).
Her parents reaction: They said no. They said that they had political problems that were complicated (pg.10). Her mom said that the army would be strict (pg.8) Her father was first shocked then angry then overp protected and discouraging (pg.8-10). Solemn(pg.8)
What does Ji-Li do instead? : She gives a note to the principal about how she cannot participate in the try-outs (pg.11).

Four olds: Old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits (P.21) according to mao the four olds were holding china back as a country and stay behind as the world changes and goes into a more modern level, and so that’s why mao wanted to get rid of the four olds and introduce the four news. (P.21). Prosperity means to be successful, and accomplish great things. The word prosperity was in the name of a market and the market was destroyed for being old (P.21-22)
4. What is a xenophile? Why is it bad to be a xenophile in Revolutionary China?
A xenophile is someone who warships anything foreign (pg.34) and it was bad because they were in the middle of a cultural revolution which meant to focus on china not foreign influences (pg.34-35)
5. What are da-zi-bao? What are being done with them? Who is Jiang Xi-wen? Why does Ji-Li hang a da-zi-bao on her house?
A da-zi-bao is like a big poster which humiliates or critisizes someone or a thing because of something that they had done in the past. (pg.38). The da-zi-bao are bieng used to critisize or say bad things about some of the educational system (pg.38) and also to humiliate different kinds of people like Ji-Li's aunt Jiang Xi-Wen (page 43-44).
Jiang Xi-Wen was Ji-Li's father's cousin. Ji-Li and other classmates hung a da-zi-bao on her house because she wears make-up and hers clothes according to mao was four olds. (pg.44-48)
6. Why does Ji-Li stop going to school for a while?
Ji-li stops going to school for a little while because people were accusing her of having a relationship with a teacher named Ke Cheng-li (pg. 49-50).
7. What is a rightist? Use your own words to briefly explain the process of remodeling ones ideology.
A rightist is someone who is a part of the conservative party.Remold one's ideology means to change ones beliefs. The process means to forget about the past and concentrate on the future.

Ji-Li's grandfather was a landlord. He owned some land and received money from the farmers who grew their crops on it. And being a land lord according to mao was very bad and you were considered a rightist, and this affected ji-Li because it created a bad impression on her and her family to others.

Flex-day trip reflection
2. Name one idea you have after this visit that relates to the word 'population'.
Ans: The idea that I had was that as there is an over growing population in Bangladesh 1/3 of the population is poor and cant pay for food. The factories that we visited had a lot of people who made an effort to earn money for their lives and needs.
Observations: 1) There were some old aged people working with dangerous tools
2) The fabric that is produced in Bangladesh is exported around the world

When Elliot writes about his experience with the Jock Rots and sends it out over the KidNet, he includes the following quote in his letter.
"I think people ought to realize that stuff like this goes on every day…The rest of you are all part of it-because you let it go on and maybe you think it's funny, or you think it only happens to geeky outsiders and kids who are smaller or fatter or skinnier or don't have so many friends or so much money as you. So tell me-what happens when you don't have so many friends one day, or you don't have so much money, or something bad happens to you?" (91-92)
Blog Question:
What is the message is he trying to get across to his classmates? (6pts)
Answer: I think Elliot is trying to say is that, they are bullying him for only one reason and that is that he is different. The Jock rots are picking on Elliot because of his way of life, looks and habits and belongings. The people who bully him find it funny and amusing but it is not and is clearly powerful and disturbing enough to change someone's life. Elliot says this through pages 91 to 93 about how he was bullied and when he fought back he was nearly killed by being thrown off a bridge...

answer: Russsell was opposed to the idea because a few days back Richie helped him with the jokrots and said not to put his name in the revealers letter or else he would beat him up...

answer: The relationship between Richie and Russel is turning into a friendship bond type thing but it may turn out in a bad way as no one knows yet.
